Some people like to read, others like to watch movies...but these people like to grow their facial hair. This story from NTD's Sarah Matheson in New York.
Moustache, patchy, goatee, recession beard, and full beard. Enough categories to shake a stick at.

And New York Champs organizer Matthew Beardzzz Saccoman says if you cant grow a beard you can run the competition.

[Box Car David Lo Verme, Patchy Beard Reining Champ]:
For me the moustache doesnt connect with the beard, but they show us love with this category. Even if we cant grow a jack passion beard.

[Jack Passion, World Champ, Full Natural Beard]:
Did you say my name. Its like Beetle JuiceSay my name and I just show up.

Jack Passion is the reining world champHis full beard is 100 percent naturalHis first world champs in 2005 sparked his interest in this unusual sport.

[Jack Passion, "Full Beard Natural" World Champ]:
And believe it or not, there is not much work involved. Its really, once the beard is out, its really about eating healthy, taking care of yourself, getting enough sleep, drinking enough water. You know a healthy man grows a healthy beard.

The ladies artificial sure was a sight to behold.

You glue that thing on your facehow do you get it off?

We dont know yetwere going to find out.

Its a sport that draws people from all over the States.

[Dennis Dickerson, Full Beard Natural Contestant]:
Well it is a very strenuous and difficult sport here. You know, you have to train daily in causing that hair to grow.

And Dennis has tips for the avid armchair-beard grower.

[Dennis Dickerson, Full Beard Natural Contestant]:
It is good to watch a little television, drink a little beer and it helps to eat sausage and sauerkraut.

All in all beard competitions are just, well, a great night of entertainmentespecially if you like the banjo.

This is Sarah Matheson, NTD, New York.

  • I love beards and mustaches and so I'm letting mine grow. Mine now has 64 days and my goal is to exceed the 114 days of growth. I also like that is a little blonde I do not care that I look weird on the street, because here in Colombia is a disgrace, because there is no beard or mustache club. Here the only ones left are the beggars long beard and old I wish I could travel to the U.S. or Europe where are clubs beard and mustache. Sorry if translated poorly, I used the google translator

  • I will grow my beard!

  • It was a great night! Anyone have any video footage of the awesome ZZ Top tribute band? Cheap SunglasseZZ. They were amazing!
