This is a short video showing the Hornby R2805XS LNER A4 'Herring Gull' with sound running on a rolling road. It's not intended to record the whole range of different sounds available but to give an idea of the overall quality of locomotive sound and how it is synchronised to the speed of the loco.

Herring Gull is entirely recorded using the default Hornby sound-chip settings and is under the control of a Gaugemaster Prodigy Advanced 2 controller which can be seen operating in the video.

As with previous Hornby sound fitted steam locomotives, the speaker is mounted facing downwards beneath the coal space in the tender with the sounds emitted through the wheel spaces either side of the axle keeper plate.

Remember, it is not possible to give an accurate representation of the sound quality from my home video camera and it is recommended that before making any purchasing decisions you listen personally to a demonstration of the locomotive in operation at your local model shop.

  • DCC Herring Gull costs 186 quid, I'd rather get a standard Herring Gull, equip it with DCC and sound, a whole load cheaper

  • @crazyracer12 Adding your own preferred sound recording will doubtless be an improvement on the Hornby offering but it's never going to be "a whole load cheaper". The cost of the 2 similar individual components (new A4 loco and sound chip) would leave you with little or no change from £186.

  • do all hornby dcc locomotives work with gaugemaster prodigy advance

  • @jmsschooner Hi. I've not encountered problems with any Hornby loco and the Prodigy Advance and see no reason why any single Hornby DCC loco would be incompatible. It should work fine with any DCC fitted loco.

  • Hi Digest59 not bad but shouldn't it have 6 chuffs per one revolution of the driving wheels instead of three?

  • That's the idea behind the video Faulcon1 - to demonstrate how this model is released from Hornby. It's not good, but there's a similar video available from my listings showing the improvements made to its running appearance and hence the sound by altering the chuff rate via CV57. Although it's never going to be 100% correct throughout the entire speed range it's better than it was.
