There are serious problems at Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort and Spa, an hour north of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Ojo Caliente is a beautiful place with incredible natural hot springs. The hot springs were recently purchased by new owners, the Scott family, whom have given me and others who have been visiting the springs for many years a lot of trouble.

I must protect myself from allegations of libel. Therefore, the following statements are either FACT or are MY OPINION only.

Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort and Spa is being mismanaged in terms of public safety, compliance with laws, and the way customers are treated.

1. The last time I was there in mid-2009, the resort was a fire trap. The pools are in a courtyard enclosed by walls with only one avenue of escape (the main entrance). Iron gates were padlocked, apparently to prevent loss of revenue from unpaid access. A staff member told me she was not trained on fire procedures. I alerted the local fire department which confirmed it found violations. I do not know whether the violations have since been corrected and whether, in the event fire blocks the main entrance, there would be any means of escape for those not physically able to scale the walls.

2. The new owners find long-time locals undesirable, and therefore discontinued a program of offering a "Two for Tuesday" discount to locals one day each week.

3. The resort is extremely conservative. It did not allow a girlfriend of mine to breastfeed her baby (a violation of state law requiring businesses to allow breastfeeding) and did not allow me to wear a Speedo bathing suit (the type sold at any Big 5 and worn commonly at public pools and sporting events, including the Olympics). On one occasion I was threatened with arrest by a security guard for wearing bicycle shorts.

For more examples of mistreatment of me and other customers, see this Facebook page:

  • Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs & Spa, once an ancient healing place for local tribes and communities, is now being run as a for-profit resort by out-of-state interests which are also involved in deep water oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

For details, see the link in the description of the video.

    Please read my previous comment.

Additionally, there is no nudity allowed in public areas at the resort.

  • Mr. Lehr's comment is absolutely false. At the time I was at Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs & Spa with a friend and her child, there was an explicity policy of allowing babies in one particular pool: The lower iron pool in the back area. We were directed to that pool by front desk staff, and that's exactly where we were when my friend was breastfeeding her child.

  • My name is Randy Lehr the Ops manager at Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa. The breast feeding issues Mr. Caditz is raising occurred with the infant in the mineral springs. Infants are not allowed in the mineral spring for obvious water quality & safety concerns. The mineral springs run 100 -107^, it is dangerous for an infant to be in those temps. We are in full compliance with all fire codes, train with staff & sponsor the local volunteer fire dept which is on our prop.

  • bastards!!!!!!!!!the is indian land!!!!!

  • Looks like a tranquil place to enjoy the spring water and socialize. I can understand the manager's concern regarding bringing children into the hot springs, people need to think twice about a child's safety and abstain from bringing their kids to places where there could by adult nudity and hot water both not suitable for the innocent kids. There are many water parks that are child friendly so parents should take them there instead.
