Wiscontrepreneur 2009 - Inexpensive Biodiesel Reactor

Please note that the actual biodiesel, methanol, and sulfuric acid mixture was in fact modified due to lack of the respective products. Water, Mountain Dew, and root beer were used as substitute representations.

What is biodiesel?
Biodiesel is the name of a clean burning alternative fuel produced from domestic,renewable resources. Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend. It can be used in compression ignition (diesel) engines with no major modifications. Biodiesel is simple to use,biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics.

Biodiesel is a great way to reduce ones impact on the environment as well as to lower your yearly fuel costs if used as a substitute for your vehicles diesel fuel. Corporate fleets can afford to purchase large batches of commercially available biodiesel; however for homeowners options are limited. In addition, low income homeowners that cannot afford the upfront startup costs (reactor, catalysts, and testing equipment) but still want to produce their own fuel end up stuck forced to pay high prices at the pump.

To lower the high upfront costs of making a biodiesel processor I have created a basic reactor with materials purchased at the UW Swap. The reactor would need additional pieces, such as a heater and tanks for washing and dewatering the fuel, however the basic concept of being able to produce a low cost reactor still exists, and can be developed further.
