La plus belle mélodie au monde, jouée de manière incomparable, bref le rêve, on sent l'émotion de façon constante. On pense à SCHUBERT qui a quitté ce monde en pleine jeunesse, BEETHOVEN avait dit de lui, qu'il y avait quelque chose de divin ! Quel compliment.
Il se peut que BEETHOVEN voyait en SCHUBERT son successeur.

As far as I know, it was also one of Liszt's merits to rediscover Schubert in full glory after a long time of partial forgetting. You can feel his deep respect and devotion to Schubert in this description.
This is incredibly lovely playing - and devoid of all treacly sentiment. It is sublime, aristocratic pianism.

Actually a Liszt transcription of a Schubert vocal piece.
This, by the way, is Rachmaninov's very last recording of anything. He died less than a year after making this recording...
