@Svitlo37 You're certainly not going to get rich that way but if you love science, and want to contribute, then this is probably the best way. Also, with any luck the lab will have a strong continuing education program and you'll be able to go to school and learn science while you work. Brookhaven National Lab for instance, has a strong relationship with Suny Stony Brook University, and consequently that university has one of the best physics and biology programs in the country.
@Svitlo37 I can respect that a lot. My advice is to find a national laboratory near you, go to their website, and write an e-mail to their human resources department explaining your situation and saying that you're looking for an internship or an entry level position for someone with your level of education. With any luck, someone in human resources will take an interest in helping you out.
Do you know how a poorly educated person could go about trying to get into this kind of work? I'm trying to teach myself as least a vague conseptual understanding of this stuff reading Michio Kaku books and youtubing it and I think I might want to make a career out of it. I'm smartr enough for it but very poorly educated and I am tryignt o learn
@Svitlo37 My best bud works on the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in Brookhaven National Lab, he and everyone he knows there have been sweatin their jobs for months now. Congress keeps passing continuing resolutions to maintain funding in short term blocks a couple weeks at a time, so their job security is almost nil. This country is in the midst of a catastrophic brain drain that it will take a generation or more to recover from.
