This video is of Paul Koller's official conversion of Adam Atomic & Danny B's 'Canabalt' running on the 8-Bit, 1Mhz Commodore 64c. I'm running a final-build 16KB cartridge image on the U1541-II, and the game will be available to buy on limited edition C64 cartridge in the new year (we are just waiting for the specifically manufactured dove-grey shells to arrive).

The game concept is (of course) by Adam Saltsman. The SID chip rendition of Danny Baranowsky's 'RUN' is by Mikkel Hastrup (encore). C64 code is by Paul Koller (Paulko64).

The game was created for RGCD's 16KB C64 Cartridge Game Development Competition 2011. The limitation of 16KB file size meant that there was no room for sound effects, but pretty much every other feature of the original was squeezed in. The open source code was used as a reference when programming this conversion, so the building generation and physics are as close as possible to the original game.

If you are interested in grabbing a copy of the game for the C64 emulator of your choice, it is freely available from CSDB (http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=103143) - featuring a different and original score by Andreas Slotte (Ghormak). The physical cartridge version will be available from RGCD (http://www.rgcd.co.uk).

It would be incredibly helpful if you could leave a comment below regarding which version of the music you think that the cartridge should have.

  • Is there anyway just to get the music? I would buy a cartage even though I don't have a c64 just for a download of the soundtrack or something.

  • @carguy303 I'll sort something out and post back here when done. It won't cost you a penny :)

  • @carguy303 The .mp3 you requested has been uploaded to the game's project page (link in description).

  • Both tracks should absolutely be included! This is amazing stuff; I found myself playing this without realizing I was playing a c64 game!

Question : I'm working on a (Xbox) C64 collection, and of course want to include this (if that's okay ofcourse); are you planning on a igger (disk) verion of sorts, with highscore for example?..

  • @Asphodellife After discussing this with Paul, he says that this is the final version of the game. He wants to return to work on his VVVVVV C64 port now, and as far as he is concerned, this game is now complete. I'll be creating a project page for the game soon with links to D64 and TAP versions (as well as the cartridge roms). You are welcome to include these with your collection :)

  • Both tracks are fantastic, but if I had to choose I'd lean towards Encore's cover of the original as featured here. I don't suppose there's any chance of including both?

  • @shrydar Hey ChristopherJam! Haven't seen you on CSDB for ages. I hope you one day manage to complete that trippy shmup you were working on :)

Sadly there is no chance of getting both SID tracks on one 16KB cart :(

  • I can hardly believe this, almost 8000 hits of my c64-game on youtube within a few days! Now if we would have published this in the 80s, we would belong to the rich and famous ;-)

  • @PaulKo64 Well deserved, PaulKo! Thanks for this game - I can't wait for the cartridge. I hope we will get to see even more C64 games from you (VVVVVV?).
