The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Rio Summit or Earth Summit was a conference held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992.
The conference was to discuss issues such as pollution, water scarcity and public transportation. 172 governments participated, with 108 sending their heads of state or government.
But there were major issues that were not being discussed at this conference. A group of activists living in NYC held a rally in front of the UN headquarters to highlight these issues. There was also a series of nonviolent direct actions that took place the night before in different key locations around the city to bring raise awareness about the conference and the important subjects that were not being considered.
This short video was a way to consolidate all of this information. It was translated into Portuguese so it could be shown in Rio at the parallel NGO "Global Forum."
