  • @rmo52: The pianist is Dave Zoller, the bassist is Chris Clarke and drummer is yours truly, Bobby Breaux. We are all Dallas-based but I worked for Al years earlier when I lived in New Orleans. We all knew Rich Matteson from his connection with North Texas State Univ. north of Dallas in Denton.

  • @Airman410 So I am supposed to assume Al Hirt was not a real master? Get real.

  • This is AWESOME!!!!! Never underestimate the power of the euphonium!!

  • Is that Terry Trotter on piano?

  • @Airman410-I'm the drummer in that vid. That was the Jacksonville Jazz Festival in '87. Al was very ill that night from a severe inner ear infection and almost didn't play.

  • God bless Al Hirt. He is misssssssssed....JO

  • When I was a senior in high school (1972) I was fortunate to be awarded a scholarship to attend the Westwoods Jazz camp in Richardton, North Dakota (not a hotbed of Jazz). I was a tenor sax player. Rich was our Master clinician. He was a real 18 karat, out of this world, crazy, snap your cap performer, teacher, and human being. Cat fractured me many time when I listened to him play!

  • This is not a battle...this is not between Rich and Al...Their both absolutely great horn players..each has something to say ...stop trying to interpret this as one is better than the other...the whole band swings and has great soloist....PERIOD!

  • @Airman410 Man AL is still and will always be the King!!!!!!!
