@KojiRecords I loved being around Shirley. Did she change into her nightgown and white gloves? She was one of the most down to earth people I've ever met. I didn't know her all that well, but she made me feel like we were old friends. She was a woman of few words, but when she did speak, she commanded your attention. Thanks for sharing your memories of her!
One of my fondest memories is hanging out with Shirley in her suite after her gig at Jazz Alley in Seattle. She had her trademark Heineken and a snifter of Drambuie (!) She changed into her comfortable clothes (basically her nightie and a robe) and her cotton white gloves... we all talked, laughed, smoked and drank until the wee hours. The next day, we cooked crab from the Pike Place Market for lunch before her Saturday performance. I shall never forget the experience! We miss you, Shirley!
Wonderful! I wish I could have discovered her while she was still here with us on this old earth! Her style of jazz was too incredible! I hope you are playing in Heaven, Shirley!
Although I have several recordings, this video is amazing, with Shirley playing and singing at the top of her game. Artist Extraordinare!I just can't ever get enough of her even on her "Here's To Life " CD with Johnny Mandell. It's the gift that keeps giving.
