Hello! This is my entry for doogey9's Folk Uke Extravaganza contest.
This is a song my dad used to sing to me when I was a youngster. His version was a bit different and included only the chorus. I've had a blast and a half learning the rest of the song for the contest!
The Hound Dog Song dates back to 1912. It was recorded by the American Quartet and Byron G. Harlan in 1912 and also again in 1926 by Gid Tanner and His Skillet Lickers.
It is interesting to note that the song was used in 1912 as the campaign song for presidential hopeful Champ Clark, representative from Missouri. He was never nominated for the presidency, though he came very close. We need campaign songs like this nowadays!
The dog featured in the video is my dog, Jane. I had to train her to sit on the chair, believe it or not. She's used to doing the trick at the end in a sitting position, so we were a little rough on that one. Although we're not quite sure what she is, the vet says she's part greyhound. She is my hound, and if any yaps come 'round wanting to kick her they will be sorry!
A big thank you to my daughter Grace who did the snappy camera work for this video. Also, thanks to my dad for singing to me when I was a kid. And, to Todd for having this groovy contest. And, thanks also to poor Shawn who had to listen to me playing this over and over again as I was learning all the lyrics. I promise not to play it again for at least a week!
Lonna,
