@101andrewj They're marines who cannot swim very well. A Colonel got sweep out into a river and drowned back in 1995.

RIP Devil Dogs ... I knew a Marine on that CH 46, luckly the guy survived; he was a exceptional swimmer.

Not all were killed. Seven died, 11 survived. Of those killed, Gunnery Sgt. James P. Paige Jr. (Gunney Paige), helped get Marines who were knocked unconscious out of the helo as he was closest to the door. Those men surfaced, still unconscious, to be rescued. Gunny Paige did not.
