Actually, Billie didn't write the song, but I think had a hand in orchestrating it. The song was written by Abel Meeropol, under his pen name Lewis Allen. But whoever wrote it, it makes no difference. It was the first song to address the issue of racism in America, and Lady Day made it her own -- and had to fight to record it, for that matter.
