Wonderful, wonderful Eleanor Steber! And what an intelligent artist, knowing that a perfect pronunciation is essential part of great singing!

With respect for this excellent voice and, in general terms, equally fine voice technique, nevertheless an equally important element of technique is the mastery of vocal-linguistic technique which is a quintessential aspect of not only a composer's style but of the cultural origin of inspiraton behind any piece of music. We live in a global market and culture, but the globalisation of musical expression is deadly. Miss Steber sings notes, but Licia Albanese, for instance, sings much more.

Eleanor had a huge voice...it was very dark-hued and very grand...I've been enjoying her videos on Youtube...her singing is magnificent. She sings this Violetta too much on the big dramatic side and I much prefer a lighter lyric voice for the fragile courtesan. Steber sounds far too robust and healthy to even pretend to be a courtesan dying of tuberculosis!

What a glorious voice she had!

She was a TRUE American Treasure!!

Pretty fearless singing. How many singers can you name who can bite into those trills and runs and execute them cleanly? Pretty impressive.

Brava, brava, thousand times brava!
What a great singer she was. In 1969, I was at a master class she was giving. Near the end, we asked her to sing...so she did. She chose Vissi D'Arte. It was a perfect rendition...stunning. Then a tear feel down her cheek and she said, "You see, I still sing like a young woman, but I look like an old bag, and no one hires me any more!" Quite a moment! I'll never forget it. Years of heavy drinking had ruined her looks, but not her voice. It was still glorious. She defined "diva".

What wonderful technique. And smart singing. She knew her limits. I'm just getting to know her and I'm very impressed!
