Most E36 owners install a Signature Motoring performance intake kit for around 9HP gain. Cost is a mere $150 or so, best value per HP gain in the E36 line.
Install time if only about 30-45 minutes in most applications. I have one in my 94 325i cabrio.

FWIW, Its not so raspy in person. Its actually REALLY mean sounding and not at all 4-Cyl Honda-ish..

It actually isnt so raspy/tin-like in real life. I guess the camera caught it better. If you check out the other videos of my car, you can get a better impression of the sound.
