It doesn't have anything to do with the singleplayer story; it's just a seperate part of the game for matchmaking or for survival of the fittest. It's suppose to be a prequel, where you would fight for Ryan or Atlas, and each time you rank up, you get more plasmids, tonics, and weapons and their upgrades. Despite some glitches, it's still pretty fun.

i dont get it, was the multiplayer some kind of survival mode where you work together to fight loads of enemies or was it player vs player?
