One of Bach's most serene and beautiful arias, which appears both in the Christmas Oratorium and the Hercules cantata (BWV 213). Sung by Laura Heimes; live video from the San Francisco Early Music Ensemble Voices of Music concert.

  • Wonderfully done - is it available on record?

  • It is available from Voices of Music on Magnatune and Instant Encore. Thanks for listening,

  • Thanks so much for all these amazing Bach recording. I've never heard such a good baroque ensemble.

Maybe the piccolo cellist could record the 6th cello suite?

I'm so jealous of the cellist ! My cello only have 4 strings !

but i've promised to myself that someday I'll definetely buy a piccolo cello to play the Bach 6th suite, and all the violin partitas. piccolo cello is also in several Cantatas. This cellist is so lucky !!

  • Thanks for listening--we are planning on recording the sixth suite :)

  • it's perfect. It's wonderful can hear this music when i get from my job so tired. No buildings, no cars, only bach and wonderful musicians.

  • i love how the cellist holds the cello to fit the baroque style :P

  • superb ensemble, beautiful voice for Bach

  • So well done! Brava!

  • @canyongoddess Later Bach adopted most of the secular cantata (including the aria performed here) to celebrate a different birthday, the birthday of Jesus, in the Xmas Oratorio BWV 248. In the Xmas verson, the aria is a transposed down to G major, a flute doubles the singer, oboes d'amore double violin 1, oboes d'caccia double violin 2 and viola, and of course, the text is altered.

  • @canyongoddess This is not an arrangement. It's the original aria (in the original scoring and original key of Bb) from Bach's cantata BWV 213 "Hercules at the Crossroads", composed for the 11th birthday of the Prince Elector of Saxony.

  • cello piccolo

  • It is an original baroque five string cello :)
