  • @hmldjr ....your friends behind you with the butt of your spear. The front ranks would probably hold their spears near the butt (possibly a counter wieght but we are not sure). In the crush however the rear ranks had to rely on their shield to protect them from lower friendly spear butts. That said it appears that you usually held the spear closer to the but rather than the centre- another advantage of underarm.

  • @hmldjr The hoplite drill, as best as we can tell, had three ranks with lowered spears and the remainder then held them more upright. In theory the ideal drill would have the fourth rows and back forming a bristleing wall suspended between 45-90 degrees (to hamper missile weapons). Hoplite warfare usually started witht he stare off and then one side would shuffle toward the other and jabbing and a little manoeuvreing would occur. Then once an advantage perceived a crush. To avoid stabbing...

  • I always felt that too. But as you stated the underarm carry would smash the spear and also the butt end had a bronze point too. How would they avoid stabbing the hoplites behind them with an underhand carry? i was under the impression that the rear hoplites would basically carry their weapons upright and stab any hoplite that was caught up under the push of the converging phalanxes.

  • @hmldjr The Charge would be more effective underarm although relief on pottery and from Greek writers- not the best sources but all we have, show warriors charing shield first with the spear either underarm extended or tucked up not aiming at the opponent. The danger was if you charge with spear exteneded in the wrong circumstance then you will snap your spear on the opponents shield and get nowhere. It was more of a push then stab affair. But even still the spear would be held under-arm
