The title refers to a lively dance. The instrument was a small drum played with one hand or drumstick while a small three holed wooden flute was played with the other hand. From the 4th Ed. of the Dictionary of the Académie Française (1762):
TAMBOURIN. s.m. (1) Sorte de tambour moins large & plus long que le tambour ordinaire, sur lequel on bat d'une seule main, & qu'on accompagne ordinairement avec la petite flûte pour danser.
(2) On le dit aussi d'un air qui se joue sur le tambourin.
