This is a project my my brother and I did for a non-competetive informal project fair for home-schooled students.

Basically, we just collected random stuff that makes a "ding" when you hit it. We had ten unique pitches (not all the same octave, though!) and two "percussion" instruments.

Each "instrument" motor is wired to one of the pins of the parallel port of an old laptop. The motors are not powered directly by the laptop, but two arrays of transistors serve as electrically controlled "switches" for each motor, the power coming from a wall adapter. The music sequences are played by a QuickBASIC program written by me.

It was a really fun project, and I learned a lot.
