You can't fly without a serial no. Swapping serials on Mustangs has been done for decades and it drives historians nuts. A new-build hull can have an original serial number and a "famous" serial number can give an airplane more provenance and a higher selling price. There are Mustangs flying today that are nearly 80-90% new-build.

  • George Bush did this!

  • God I hope that next years races are far worse and at least a hundred people are butchered when a couple of jets go straight in to those stands filled with fans and we'll get to see some uncensored reality, you know like the real thing by people ready to capture it!

  • I doubt that the pilot was the issue either. If a trim tab comes off one of those aircraft at those speeds, the forces on the control stick would be too much for any pilot to control. I would not have mattered if the pilot was 21 and a bodybuilder. The back-force on the stick would have been too much for anyone.

  • @SenorSpode Actually, if you look at the rebuilding/refurbishment process they did on that aircraft, virtually all the parts of the fuselage were new or completely refurbished leaving little if any of the metal the aircraft was originally built from. I think the flight surfaces, wings, tail and control surfaces were all new. They were certainly highly modified. I would be surprised if metal fatigue due to age played a huge role, but I could be wrong.

  • @corebare You know what you're talking about. When you replace more than 50% of the content of a hull (airframe), it no longer retains the original serial or BuNo assigned; it is essentially a different aircraft. There are guys building brand-new full-scale P-51s from scratch, are you aware of this? Why can't the racers use these new hulls? Oh, yeah...no charisma or charm. Oh, let's not forget: BETTER METALLURGY. I rest my case. Have A Nice Day.

  • @SenorSpode You don't know what you're talking about. Do you really think there was one part on "The Ghost" that was an original part from WWII? Do you have anyclue how many times it has been rebuilt? Or how many planes it's actually been?

AND, the are PERFECTLY designed to go those speeds and pulls those G'S! This are the highliest modified and most advanced private aircraft in the world. THE ONLY THING that couldn't handle the G's that day was the pilot.

  • @senorspode the whole plane had nothing stock on it Nothing the metal was redone the cockpit everything but I heard that part of the tail came off but idk.

  • @WattDeChocobo Oh, do I hear you well on that! I'm also nauseated on the Conspiracy Theorists sounding off on this. They say we can't see the pilot's head in a shot, the trim-tab was airbrushed out, it was Bush's fault, etc. Someone even showed me a pre-impact pic with Osama's picture pasted in the plane. Yeah, I understand 100% what you mean; it's sickening.

  • @SenorSpode I understand what you're saying :) I'm just sick and tired of the "it must be a conspiracy! there's no plane parts left!" people...I kinda just lumped my response to them that reply XD

Before even looking at materials, the elder plane's at a disadvantage due to wear/metal fatigue. Throw in materials advances and newer's better. The only disadvantage a newer plane might have is the sheer number of parts; there's more pieces to have fail. Here, though, the old plane'ss less safe.
