Her French diction is problematic, even Kasarova will admit it. However, aren't you missing the bigger picture of what she is portraying in her singing by focusing so much of the fine points of French pronunciation? These singers sing in 4 or 5 different languages that they don't speak in real life.

The point is to bring the music and the drama to life. That she does... to the degree that even people who don't understand French at all can relate. That's art.

Que de manières, que de chichis... Outre des problèmes avec le texte, elle a des problèmes avec la ligne du chant, ce qui est plus grave. Tout est sur-prononcé, elle fait un sort à chaque mot, elle grimace sans cesse et ne fournit à aucun moment l'expression nécessaire à ce moment de l'opéra (la fin, en l’occurrence), ce qui laisse penser qu'elle ne le connaît même pas.

Dommage, c'est une excellente cantatrice en général, mais nul n'est parfait.

@AnatoleBelge I recall seeing a clip or two of Callas singing with a score, tho I don't think she did that regularly since she had really bad eye sight. That said I agree with you. No use feeding the troll, tho. It's a waste of time. :-)

Incidentally, this role seems to be well suited for Kasarova and her voice. Her facial expressions and gestures are very convincing. She seems to feel the emotions of Sapho. Taken as a whole, without carping about technique, this is a good, artful performance.

It is bullshit that you haven't the integrity to say you don't like someone but have to dream up bullshit excuses that don't hold water. Then try to pass off yourself as a pro in the midst of doing the most unprofessional thing imaginable for a performing pro (not saying that you are. I'm no sucker and neither are others reading this). Appeal to authority is no argument at all. I'm done with you.

@AnatoleBelge BS reasons according to your ignorance: diction (not French by a long shot), quality (an unpleasant tremolo in the voice) and interrupting the dramatic flow by turning the page of a score. What are yours? NOTHING because your credentials are less than NOTHING. Check out comments on the other vid on youtube that are more or less the same as mine. Kasarova has the possibility of doing this well but this is not IT. Why should it bother you so much that I don't like this performance?

I bet there are some suckers out there willing to buy that and the Brooklyn bridge along with it. Get a life... or a career, for that matter. Callas died along time ago and when she was alive she was way too professional to go around slinging bullshit mud at her colleagues. You are nothing. Stand on your own and quit using Callas already.

@AnatoleBelge Do your own homework. I am not a man. You are obviously ignorant of professional standards because you are not one. You can only like something from your guts. As a teacher and singer, I give the reasons why this is not a top performance - reading from the score that spoils the acting (that could have been convincing otherwise), poor diction and quality at times. "Pulling Callas through the mud" - that's really delusional and stupid. She was and remains the gold standard.
