I don't get it. I always watch the tonight show, and like David Letterman, but I just don't get this. Like at all. Is he making fun of their names or is it an inside joke or what? Can someone explain?

Letterman is referencing a humorous short story by Thomas Meehan called "Yma Dream"; it was performed on television by Anne Bancroft, and in a reading by Christine Baranski. Both are currently available on Youtube. Mostly, I think, Letterman was amusing himself.

It was a lame joke to begin with, but I think, in hindsight, that it flopped even harder due to horrible comedic timing. Dave thought he could do his schtick where he frequently pauses in hopes of getting more laughs and it backfired.
