Ta-Ra-Ra Boom-de-ay! was a 1891 American folk song composed by Henry J. Sayers of Missouri who also wrote the lyrics. It was recorded in 1892 by Len Spencer as one of his first achievements as recording pioneer. Performed here by Mary Martin in 1943.

  • The 50s were hardly the height of repression, but crikey dickens! Lifting her skirts and displaying her legs like that isn't half a shocker even now, just from the coquettish way she does it!

Meanwhile, this is a weird song.

  • @GuanoLad

This well may be "A Weird Song" however, so is the term "Crikey Dickens"

    Thanks for the look.

  • Pretty, great acting, great voice and music. It's hard to believe this was made in 1943!

  • Ta-ra-ra-Boom-de-ay, did you get yours today, I got mine yesterday, that's why I walk this way!

  • Not so - I understand that Mr. Sayer first heard this song in a speakeasy where it was sung by an African-American woman named Mama Lou. He copied it down and sanitized the lyrics as much as he could, then apparently published it as his own. It was later adopted as a themesong by the British performer Lottie Collins and her lyrics can be read at Wikipedia. Later, after Collins had died, there was a copyright battle over the song, and it was declared to be public property.
