I believe Ravel is probably the greatest orchestrator of all time .. this work especially takes orchestral dynamics, layering and tonal colour exprssions to a new level. He also did a brilliant job interpreting Mussorgsky's piano pieces from his Pictures at an Exhibition ... genius is an overused word but I think it is fitting here.

"On A Clear Day..." source music. Also source music for "Night Music" from Golden Boy.

I agree. Along with Rimsky-Korsakov, from whom Ravel learned a lot. And Respighi, also Rimsky's follower.

It totally sucks that the higher quality, clearer recording of this masterpeice was removed from youtube. :/
Oddballishly etheric and moody. It's ashame that Isao Tomita's rendition of this is no longer available in North America.

@venuspluto67 That is so true.

@zmov1: I think a lot of younger people think of classical music as boring because they associate the term with bland, sterile chamber-music. But a classical piece from a musician with real imagination and talent really is an entirely different kettle of fish.

@venuspluto67 Tomita's version is one of the most impressive things I have ever heard. I would really love to have it again.
