Penny Wong on $16.4 billion 'blowout'

Climate Change Minister Penny Wong is off to Paris today. She'll be attending the next round of American-led negotiations to help forge a new global climate treaty due to be signed by the end of the year.

But at home, the government's hurriedly-cobbled-together alliance with some environment groups is beginning to fray. This week, a report commissioned by the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) estimated that compensation to the big carbon polluters under the government's proposed emissions trading scheme had 'blown out' to $16.4 billion, and the ACF wants strings attached to that government assistance.
