These "smoke" machines just put out dry ice though, right?

I think the older smoke machines used dry ice. The new ones use some kind of glycerol oil/water mix. If the smoke detectors at The National used radioactive Am-241 ionization either type of "smoke" machine could trigger the alarm.
The thing I don't get is why not just continue the show with out the smoke machine? I guess I should just be happy that they even did an American tour.
