Separated from his wife Emma (Jennifer Connelly), amnesiac John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell) awakens alone in a strange hotel to learn he is wanted for a series of brutal killings - but he can't remember if he did or didn't commit these murders. Indeed, most of his memories have completely vanished, and he becomes the focus of interest for both mad genius Dr. Schreber (Kiefer Sutherland) and sympathetic detective Frank Bumstead (William Hurt). Attempting to unravel the twisted riddle of his identity, Murdoch encounters a group of ominous beings known as the Strangers, shadow-like figures who have a collective memory and possess the ability to stop time and alter physical reality through a process called The Tuning. Focusing their minds, they are able to change the size and shape of the material world. Murdoch manages to stay a step ahead of his adversaries as he slowly jigsaws together the puzzle of his past-bittersweet memories of his childhood, his love for Emma, and the key to the murders -- while following a labyrinth leading to the Strangers' Underworld

The little boy in the black coat and hat creeps me out the most, because he never talks but hes always there.

One of the best kisses ever. This movie is such an underappreciated classic.

@ PaytonWestlake Yes, They change the city to ensure no escape. However, they couldn't escape even if they had the chance. They are trapped on a Space platform.

@chic0stik
I always assumed that Kiefer's character suffered massive injuries when the Strangers were "persuading" him to do what they wanted. He's trying to speak with only one working lung.

@chic0stik The city is like a zoo or a science lab. They change peoples memories to observe how it changes human behaviour. I think the buildings represent Schrebers rat maze. Because the city (maze) keeps changing, it is impossible to escape. Remember the taxi driver who cant remember how to get to the beach. As for Sutherlands Dr Schreber goes, well, he mentions a heart condition but I think thats just how he decided to play him. Kinda makes him creepy. good film. lots of meat on it.

I'm sorry but I'm so confused.
Like how does swapping memories and changing building structures help the strangers discover what makes a human, human? Why did Murdoch awake with powers? Why does Dr. Shreber speak. just. like. this.
help. me. get. this. movie. please.
