I don't think he knew at the time that the word was considered offensive by many. Many Americans aren't aware it's considered offensive. I think it matters where the word came from. People shouldn't just accept anythting they hear about a word. That's how false urban legends can take root. Many Americans learned the " true meaning" of this word from Suzan Harjo who appeared on Oprah. My question is who turned the word into something offensive? Whites or Suzan Harjo?
