True, the cardinals are the best team in the NL right now. The holliday acquisition certainly didn't hurt. We were kind of off on this one...wainwright and carpenter have been much better than we anticipated. I would still like to see how they would match up against an AL team though.

But you can't argue that they weren't the best team in the playoffs that year just because of their mediocre record. They made the playoffs and did what they had to do to win. The regular season is so meaningless sometimes. For example, the Phillies and Dodgers in the regular season were 4-4 head to head. What happened in the playoffs? Phillies won 4 out of 5. 2 different seasons (post season and regular season). Furthermore, many teams make trades that make their team better at the deadline

But the regular season is a larger sample size of a team's ability. I'm not saying that whoever has the best record deserves to be the champion, because that's just stupid. But if a team gets hot at the right time they can beat better teams and eventually become the champion. A seven game series doesn't serve as a microcosm of an entire season, it just shows how that team is playing at that point in time.

I agree to an extent.. If the team with the best record always won there wouldnt be any point in playing the games. Just always give it to the team with the best record. However, I still believe the best team at the right time, as you say, was the Phillies. Not the Rays or the Red Sox or whoever else.

Oh, I completely agree with that last statement. That makes them the World Series Champs, which is far more important than being the best team. But, the fact is, they were not THE best team from last year, they only played the best at a specific point in time.

Which I think indicates the better teams.. The teams that play best in pressure situations are the better teams.. Regardless of record.

I guess we agree to disagree.
