An overview of my 2009 Lumia composition entitled "The Clarke Orbit." Equal parts kinetic sculpture and contemplative space, "The Clarke Orbit" pays tribute to two of the most notable men to have explored the frontiers of art and science: Sir Arthur C. Clarke (Author/ Futurist who conceived the Geostationary Orbit, aka the Clarke Orbit) and Thomas Wilfred(Artist/Musician/Inventor who built the Clavilux, a device for performing compositions in Light aka Lumia)
"The Clarke Orbit" utilizes opto-mechanical principles to create a contemplative space where the viewer can sit for minutes or hours viewing a constantly changing series of undulating light forms. The physical principals at work are inspired by Wilfreds mechanical vocabulary to create complex and subtle forms that constantly shift.
The primary visual feature is an undulating band of equatorial of light 360 degrees around. The viewer will sit in the space and notice subtle motion, but the actual rotational progression of the piece is only discernible over many hours. The full period of the work is exactly 24 hours.
