The SST employs repeated 1 pound incremental predictable perturbations in standing (RIPPS) to quantify effective stepping limits expressed as a percent of total body weight (% TBW), for the purposes of identifying fall group membership, appropriate for adults 65+ years of age. Soon to be published results suggest 10% TBW the most discriminant to fall status compared to four balance related measures examined ( TUG, SLST, TS, gait speed). Testing is performed seperately in the forward and backward directions. Rear stepping directional limit testing is depicted in this video. This video illustrates a SST score consistent with known fallers. Body weight 130 pounds.

Thanks for your deep insight and posted comment.

  • wtf?

  • novel objective and quantifiable method of assessing stepping responses resulting in measureable outcomes suitable for screening/treatment.
