I received 65g of Bizmuth this morning and couldn't wait to have a go at crsytallizing it. I used a hot plate and a mini gas torch.

I let the first melt sit on the hotplate for quite a while before taking it off (with the hotplate cooling) but this was fairly homogenous when I poured out the melt.

Trying again, I allowed it to cool more quickly (but not too quickly). About 60s of cooling, This gave the results you see here.

I have some ideas for trying to grow a suspended crystal and if succesful I'll post a vid.

  • Very cool, I think it'd be neat to suspend some melted Bismuth in a thermos, close it up, and let it sit so it can lose heat very, very slowly and perhaps make even bigger crystals

  • Very cool! good job for your first try especially!
