"Yankee Doodle" is a well-known Anglo-American song, the origin of which dates back to the Seven Years' War. It is often sung patriotically in the United States today and is the state anthem of Connecticut

Yankee Doodle (Lyrics)

Yankee Doodle went to town,
A-riding on a pony,
He stuck a feather in his hat
And called it macaroni.

chorus

Yankee Doodle, keep it up,
Yankee Doodle dandy,
Mind the music and the step,
And with the girls be handy.

Father and I went down to camp,
Along with Captain Goodin',
And there we see the men and boys
As thick as hasty puddin'.

chorus

And there was Gen'ral Washington,
Upon a slapping stallion,
A-giving orders to his men-
I guess there was a million.

chorus

A long war then was fought and won:
The British were defeated,
And Yankee Doodle was the march
To which their troops retreated.

chorus

  • FINALLY! THE FULL ORIGINAL VERSION!

  • This British song is basically about an American riding into town on a pony (small and lacking distinction) who puts a feather in his hat and calls it macaroni (a word for fancy headgear for European aristocracy), basically it was meant to make the Americans out to be a bunch of country hicks acting like their just as good as the old world gentry. Americans turned it around and said YES! we are just as goddamn good as them if not better and we'll sing this as a march to show it.
