You've seen it in kickboxing flicks and mixed-martial-arts tournaments. You might even have tried it yourself while pounding a gym bag with an experimental cross of an elbow or a hip-torsioning roundhouse kick. Two fists, two feet, two elbows and two knees calloused by conditioning -- that's Muay Thai, the science of eight limbs.

Unlike other martial arts, Muay Thai practitioners don't strive for colored belt rankings. They don't memorize elaborate katas. They don't don black catsuits and claim to know mystical death touches. They simply practice a straightforward and distinctive series of knee and elbow strikes and low kicks, conditioning muscles and building power. Take, for instance, their basic roundhouse kick, a unique-in-the-world-of-martial-arts strike that relies on core strength and hip-twisting power to connect with all the subtlety of a thunderclap.

  • Wrong, armadillo.

Muay Thai comes directly from muay boran, "boran" meaning "ancient".

Muay Boran was the fighting style that the soliders used, during medieval times, when they had lost their weapons.

Later, for the sole pleasure of the King(whatever the name was) of Thailand, Muay Boran was formed into a sport, with rules. They removed deadly punches and other hits from Muay Boran and it became Muay Thai, the sport that we enjoy today.

So yes, Muay Boran IS deadlier than Muay Thai.

  • Tony Ja is Thai citizen, born in Thailand, but he isn't ethnic Thai. He is Kuay or Souy, peoples who work with elephants in Thailand. So he is definitely not Khmer nor Cambodian. He train many martial art including gymnastic but he never train Hapkator oops! Bokator. Bokator was invented by Hapkido master San Kim Sean, Cambodian refuge, after the Ong Bak came out. Kim Sean got inspired by Tony Ja movie and decided to go back homeland to reinvent the lost Khmer pride. Hapkator.

  • @ImmigrantFreaks it is and it isnt, there are certain parts of the sport form that have evolved seperate from muay thai , such as the footwork and conditioning taken frm boxing. and certain moves that have been modified for use in the ring. And deadly punches havent been thrown out all together, that is a lie, the only rules that are common in all Thai fights are no hit to the groin and (usually) no hits to the back of the head..a]

  • Although he's entertaining is really funny hearing you kids overating him like hell.

  • @Inwjohnza101 So are you

  • this is a disgrace to muay thai.

  • Tony Ja is Khmer ( Cambodian). he learned Khmer Bokator martial art . he was interviewed by a Cambodian journalist while he promoted thai movie in Cambodia. he spoke in Khmer language .here some of his words in translation " please all Khmer people support our Khmer Bokator martial art .......'' ! if u can understand khmer u can see the video in you tube . just type Tony Jaz speaking Khmer .

  • Tony Ja is Khmer who lives in thailand . his martial art that he use is call Bokator the Angkorian martial art ,age thousand years ago ! Muay thai just existed hundred years after Bokator Khmer !it's just a copy of Khmer Bokator martial art !

  • They should have used a man whose balls had actually dropped instead of that giggling freak. Otherwise, great short video with Tony Jaa

  • modern day bruce lee

  • aw heh this is a really sweet video! the way the poor boy laughs while tony jaa dominates. i love tony jaa. it's a shame about ong bak 2 and 3, they were terrible films, but ong bak remains probably my favourite martial-arts-film-for-the-fighting-alone, because of its pure style and lack of wires, jump cuts, or similar interventions in viewing the style. no doubt all sorts will jump all over me for that, but i don't care: i love that film! (in spite of generaly preferring cult HK/Japanese)
