At approximately 7pm Tuesday Oct. 25, 2011, Naval Personal, Police and Fire Depts. of the Municipal were called upon to rescue 44 passengers aboard the FIESTA CRUISER sunset cruise ship, when the boat lost all steering and was adrift in the Sea of Cortez, ultimately running aground on Sandy Beach near Penasco del Sol Hotel in the city of Puerto Penasco "Rocky Point" Mexico.
High winds were a factor in play during this tragedy in which an elderly american female tourist lost her life due to cardiac arrest. The boat captains decission to go out to sea on a windy evening such as Tuesday is very questionable, especially after the boat became hung up for over an hour on a sandbar due to an extremely low tide as it tried to leave port.
It was also stated the the port had been closed after the FIESTA CRUISER had left and this delayed other boats from being able to come to the assistance of the destressed ship...
