"Masters From Their Day"
Can a classic recording be produced in just one day?? Some incredibly talented folks have already shown us: Patsy Cline, Owen Bradley, Otis Redding, Tom Dowd, Elvis Presley, Sam Phillips, The Beatles, George Martin, James Brown. A lot of timeless records were produced in a single recording session - songs that we still sing at the top of our lungs.
'MASTERS From Their Day' is a web series and an homage to the 'masters.' Each episode of MFTD gathers a set of collaborators to attempt to reprise that classic work-flow and produce a quality track in one recording session.
The video concludes with the mastered track from their day in the studio.
A week before this session, the band (The Library Is On Fire) informed me that their regular drummer wasn't available for our scheduled recording date because he had been booked for a gig with another band (a reality of life as a working artist -- juggling multiple-projects). It should be easy to imagine the difficulty in rescheduling a project with such a sprawling crew (video crew, studio, engineer, producer, assistant engineer, and band). Luckily, they had a back-up -- the band's original drummer, from when they were still based in Ohio. He stepped-up and filled-in seamlessly...ah, the pleasures of working with great musicians.
As I mentioned, we had just worked with Perry two days earlier, recording Annie and the Beekeepers. Perry and I became familiar with each other's work-modes and processes, and we felt good going into this session. Perry and I sat down to discuss strategy and logistics before the band arrived, and that proved to be a good idea. As soon as the band arrived and set up, Perry went to work immediately setting up the drum mics in the 'Glyn Johns' style, as we had just planned. I really wanna understand how the "Rain Drop" effect sounds so good. Normal mix effect will not make it sounds like it. Even if when I open the song with analytical programs, such as Samplitude, Goldwave, I still cannot figure it out.
Also, WHERE IS MY LYRIC ???

I wasn't expecting it, but the song turned out to be pretty cool. =)

Some see an indie-punk band who - while allowing the world a peek into their private creative process - put cool equipment to excellent, artistic use, and created a great new song and offered it to us free of charge..
"Others" see a waste because "Others" would (web experience leads me to assume) rather hear Nickleback et.al. or themselves- cause they could do much better (but cannot/will not.)
Also "free"? Most of Haters' "time" - judging by the proliferation & stink of their comments.
