It's important because the Hawaiian Monk Seal is close to extinction with only around 1100 animals remaining. They pre-dated man by thousands of years and man is the main contributor to their decline. Learning more about them is vital to redefining their Critical Habitat Area, which currently does NOT include the deeper ocean areas where they actually feed, nor the main Hawaiian Islands.
