Rock Climbing Rescue, El Capitan, Yosemite, Part 1

Part 1, Rock Climbing Rescue, El Capitan. A drunk climber has fallen and is only being held by the rope around his leg. This is around 10am and the Yosemite rescue team risks their life to save him. They did not know how well the rope was anchored by the drunk climber when the rescuer jumared up.

Ok he was drunk as I was right next to him when they had him in the litter. He was hauling bags on Zenyatta Mondatta in preparation to climb the route. I believe he tried a space body haul where he was a counter weight to haul up the bags. I heard he miscalculated the weight and went zinging down and got hung up in the ropes.

I'm wondering if the video poster knows for sure if this guy was actually drunk or not. He definitely sound drunk, but that might just be the combination of his California stoner accent and the fact the he's been hanging upside-down for a long time.

He must have been hanging at least a hour or more as search and rescue had to get up there. Then they had to fire a line to him with a rope gun.

Doesnt matter if their drunk, a criminal, or being an ass to the rescue team. its the rescue teams job to save all lives. unfortuntly there are some ppl that do stupid things and we have to go rescue them. but its what we're trained to do and we risk our lives for strangers.

I stayed in the Valley all one summer, back in'75, and was amazed at how many climbers were buzzed while climbing. I paired up with Royal and Yvon a few times, and asked them if they would climb with a guy who was high. They both said no. Then, I asked if they would rescue a guy in trouble who was high, and they both said yes. That' the brotherhood of climbers for ya! There is a lot to be said for a good belay. If you don't use the safety protocols for setting pro, you may never climb again!
