This is a PS2 game I made for a 2nd year Computer Games Technology coursework at the University of Abertay Dundee. This coursework won a runner-up prize in the Sony competition for 2nd year students.

The goal of the coursework was to gain an understanding of the PS2 Linux kit's 2D capabilities and implement a pseudo 3D effect. I chose to base my game on 'WonderBoy in Monster World' for the Sega Mega Drive, made by Westone Co Ltd. I implemented parallax scrolling to fulfil the coursework requirement.

The player progresses by moving from left to right across the level. Killing monsters along the way gives them gold to spend on weapon and shield upgrades or on replenishing their health once they reach the shop at the end of the level. The levels are randomly generated each time from a random tileset and increase in size with each new level, adding more monsters.

Personal touches include being able to control the clouds and castle (a cropped version of Magus' castle from Chrono Trigger) on the title screen. :)

All sprites and sounds copyright to Westone Co. Ltd. apart from title screen castle graphic, which is copyright to Square Enix (formerly Square) and the splash screen graphic, which is my own work.

Also note that the player blink rapidly when hit but the framerate on Youtube appears to be too low to register it, hence why he disappears completely at one point.

  • Very nice!

Have you ever any plany for putting it on the internets?

  • I figured the amount of people with PS2 Linux kits to run it on was pretty small, but I could probably find a way if they were interested.

  • Depends; this was made with the official Sony-made PS2 linux and I don't know if that particular flavour is needed. Also lack a PS3. :(

  • This game is WB in Monster World, not in Monster Land... please correct it.

  • Hey, they stole Magus castle on the title screen..that is from Chrono Trigger :(

  • That's totally wicked!

  • wow, i hated ps2linux during my coursework, i didn't think anything this polished could be produced :P abertay must have a better set up than caley

did you use the sps2 lib for this? also how long did you spend on development?

  • dude looks pretty cool its like monster land wonderboy 2 (the best one). Should expand it and make it better man and for windows, high time there was a new wonderboy. Gotta incorperate the old wicked gameplay though.

  • Awm thats a shame. Surely theres some sort of conversion tools to play it on PC anyway?

  • Well you can run Linux on the PS3 by partitioning the drive quite easily, surely it wouldn't be too far from that?

And PS3 homebrew is pretty non-existent, so you might be heralded as a pioneer even ^_^
