I'm pretty sure it's a Northern Water Snake, but it might be a cottonmouth. It's not real clear but you'll be able to see him.

Definitely Northern Water Snake. It's banded. I grew up on the Rappahannock and it's FULL of them!

It's a Northern Water Snake. Cottonmouths are only found in southern VA. Also Cottonmouths swim on top of the water not below it......
