The Sinner depicts the eventful night of a mysteriously sleezy character toying with the idea of hypocrisy and sin. We later find out his true identity.
By using the title of a vicar this film challenges the general perception of it's audience and lures them into a false sense of understanding of the protagonist before twisting the character profile on it's head.
The non-linear narrative form conveys the sense of a two sided story, one being slow and disciplined while the other is fast and ruthless. By placing the barman in the confession booth the film intends to lead the audience into believing the confessing man is the protagonist, but by revealing he is the hard working barman and the sinner is in fact the vicar it adds a dark comical twist on the character development.
