The most basic shogi proverb: Avoid a Sitting King. I will show an example for why you should move your King in the opening.

I learned all the shogi proverbs I know from Shogi Kakugen:
http://www.shogi.net/kakugen/

How to Play Shogi:

The program I am using is BCM Shogi:

Sorry the sound isn't very good, I don't have a good microphone.

  • Hi, thanks for starting the proverb videos! It's something I also wanted to start before but couldn't, since I had a lot of other series to do.

It'd better for those youtube shogi fans out there to have such a great series posted by a native English speaker.

I agree with shogi4fun that your English might be a bit too fast, but as for me, I can barely keep up with it. And I think native fast English is cool! I think I want to learn a lot from your English.

  • Hey, sorry I'm late to reply, but thanks for this comment! I'm glad you're following my videos.

Lately I've been wishing there are more and more resources available in English so I can learn shogi, but it's really hard to find anything substantial. I'm glad I know a little Japanese, because I can study using Japanese sources (especially Saikyou Shogi Bonanza and Gekisashi: Joseki Dojo on PSP) to learn. Since no one else seems to be doing it, I decided to start sharing my shogi knowledge.

  • @hirohiigo Keep going! Up until now The only good english source I've found is Hidetch's vids. The more the better!

  • Thanks for this. I am a beginner at Shogi and proverbs like these are particularly useful because they are so easy to digest.

  • I dont think the problem vith voice is in pronounciation neither in speed , but it looked like your mic isn't working properly , or try using another software .

  • I understand what you mean. Instead of making subtitles for HIDETCHI's videos, I also think these people should be making their own videos in their own language. :)

  • Hmmm, maybe THIS subtitles are not so bad as I thought before. ;-)

Because this subtitles are the SAME language as the voice, I don't really need them so much, BUT I can look there if I need.

Nevertheless I believe that subtitles in other languages are not so good for me when not understanding the voice. Then better read a book.

But maybe at the other side: if I almost understand the voice, also german subtitles could help when OCCASIONAL looking there.

  • And now, thanks for the subtitles, too.

Now I can understand some parts that I couldn't hear.

  • You're right that subtitles make commentary in a video less advantageous than a book. However, I feel that if I am hard to understand, subtitles will make misunderstanding a nonissue.

Also, the main point of making this series, for me, is to provide people with a visual explanation of the proverbs. Shogi Net's Kakugen page is fantastic, but the diagrams are difficult to read. So even if one must read my commentary, the important part of my videos, I feel, is the visual demonstration. :)

  • I believe, I've read somewhere also something about subtitling of Hidetchis videos.

I for MYSELF (!!!) didn't like that. With subtitles, the advantage of a video is gone and then I would better read a book.

But that's only MY (!!!) opinion.

Listen to what other says (and as I told, somebody had spoken already about subtitling shogi videos, too).
