This is just one of the loveliest Christian hymns written I think. And the message is rich and profound.

There is a price to pay for sin before a holy God.

Sin is transgression of God's commandments. You shall worship only the Lord your God. Do not profane His name. Honor your father and mother. Do not murder, commit adultery, steal, lie or covet other people's goods. These commandments (and others in the Bible) reveal God's perfect holiness and righteousness. To break them is to sin.

The penalty for sin: Death. Eternally, in Hell.

You face that penalty for breaking just one command one time. That penalty is owed, and a just judge, which God certainly is, will require it of you.

Unless...

See, this is where the beauty of this hymn comes in. All the penalty owed for all sin has been paid by Jesus Christ. He paid it by dying on a cross. And He conquered death itself by rising from the dead on the third day, just as the Bible says.

For you to receive the forgiveness and covering and "washing white as snow" that Jesus paid for, you need to REPENT (change your mind about sin - it is real, it matters, it leaves you hopelessly guilty before God - and turn away from your sinning) and TRUST JESUS CHRIST. It is only through faith in Jesus Christ that you can be saved.

Repent and trust Christ today. He paid it all for you.

  • Thanks, brother.

Where'd that extra verse come from?

  • I took all of the verses straight out of the hymnals at church. The books are about 60 years old I think.

  • If Jesus paid it all, why are we here?

  • That's an excellent question. His first followers asked Him, after His resurrection, if He was going to restore the Kingdom of Israel. He said not even to be concerned with that, but that they would receive power from the Holy Spirit to be His witnesses to the world. So that's why we're here - to tell His good news. Turn to Him in faith! He loves you and will save you ATOM09. God bless you.
