Pete had all shots in my opinion (most of them exceptional, the rest very good), all except an effective backhand pass when attacked. That's the only significant difference with Fed in my opinion.
you are correct thats why he would lose to edberg alot because edberg would come in and attack his backhand and make him rush his backhand which sampras didnt like, but if you took away sampras's serve and made it ordinary he isnt the same player and thats what the french open does it took away his big serve and thats why he couldnt win there.
@Thetoughestweight1 Yeah, Pete was the best server of all time coupled with great speed, balance and volleys. His forehand was a hammer, flat mostly and an unusual grip but his backhand was a little suspect at times, especially on slower surfaces. He got out of so much trouble with that amazing second serve. Federer is definitely a better all round player but I would favour Pete on grass.
@jayfey77 Oh yeah, for sure. That's because Sampras was around 30 at the time and not as sharp as he was some years before. Just like Federer isn't number one anymore at 30 and hasn't won a major for two years.
@temp850 yeah well federer has been right there.at the us open semifinal this year he had 4 match points on djokovic and lost them all.and federer was very young when he beat sampras.it was way before he became really good.he even lost the next round after beating sampras.
