i tried this and it came up as Cali, too. i live in Canada. i found out that if you trace a gmail IP address you will always be re-routed to a Cali location (in my case its always Mountainview) because if someone sends an email from the gmail browser it will be hidden by google. All original IPs are hidden by google and then we're given a gmail server IP location -_- ... so while this is a great tutorial on how to get the IP unfortunately tracing it after the fact is worthless.

@14sJakeB190 If you trace "mr. google" than it will pop up as california. I think it's marina del way or something.

Doesn't work.
I tested this with my friends ip address he lives in Washington state and he sent me an email, I copied the the ip address and it gave me California.
