bamboo starscraper - Coachella Arts and Music festival- 2009

This original piece was designed by Gerard Minakawa for Coachella Music and arts festival 2009. Prefabricated in Santa Barbara and assembled on site in Indio Ca. It was built by over 50 dedicated volunteers and the combined leadership of Bamboo DNA and The Natural Builders. The tensegrity of the structure relies on the rope lines in constant tension and the Bamboo in constant compression. It was engineered to withstand 95mph gusts of wind and a total force of over 9,000 pounds of lateral force on each foundation connection. This fully engineered structure was approved by the Building Dept of the City of Indio.
