  • The car jumper wires are indeed overkill. These are designed for heavy current, whereas discharging a TV has high voltage but very small current. I simply used them because they were my most convenient option. They were long enough and gripped onto the screwdriver securely.

  • ??? I've never seen it done this way and i've been messing around with tv repair since 1967.

you don't need those big heavy wires, and there's no need to fasten the one wire to a water pipe.

just use a clip wire and fasten one end to the screwdriver and the other to that silver metal band on the outside of the crt and discharge.

wait one minute and then discharge it again to be sure. I got a shock off of tube one time, it's a pretty good jolt but it didn't hurt me.

  • its like using a shoe brush to clean your teeth...

  • @stephenlepage I hear ya on the clamps. a CRT can stockpile a good bit of voltage, and a good, fat secure clamp would make for that much more security. besides, this is an excellent "Tim Taylorized" method

  • DONT TRY THIS AT HOME ,RISK OF ELECTROCUTION.

  • This is plain silly. I honestly thought it was a joke. I work on TV's and radios all day . lol YES the cables are waaaayyy overkill. A simple wire with alligator clips on both ends one to the metal frame around the crt and the other to the screwdriver ground out the crt and wait a few minutes and do it again.

  • I was 15 when I first did this - I felt just as nervous as the day I was supposed to spend a night with my girlfriend. Brings back memories from an old school tech-geek :P

  • You just neen a small jumper wire from ground . It makes a small pop then it is safe ,no big deal

  • it is the thinnest part, but it's still damn thick :)
