This is one variation of some of things that I often practice to improve my ability to improvise around the drums and explore my setup.

The idea is to break up the sextuplets in random singles, doubles, paradiddles, with bass drum and hands.

There is actually a 5 step process to get to this point but that would take far longer than a 10 minute you tube video. This is the end result.

The idea is to completely play in a random fashion. Try to trip yourself up. The challenge is keeping the time correct. I have a high ping for beat one in this video.

Obviously if you had pre arranged fill patterns you could play them 10 times faster. That's not the point of this exercise.

  • Great playing, man. I can tell you've got a good handle of the drumset. However, I really don't think this video needed to be eight minutes long. The ideas you were trying to get across, even at those three tempos, could've been said in probably a quarter of the time. Wonderful playing and sound, though.

  • Hey Matt,

    Thanks for your comments.

I really don't know from one note to the next whether I am going to be playing a single, or double, or a bass drum, or whatever in sextuplets.

I like to play for a while to get a lot of different ideas on the tape. Nothing is planned.

If I was only playing each for 30 seconds to a minute it would be easy to just plan out some fills like most do.

Ultimately if video time is a problem for you just fast forward or feel free to stop at any time.

    Julian
