    This refers to an identity, rather then equals :)

    For example,

    3 = 2 + 1 is the equation, and this is definitly equal

    But, this is not an identity (3 lines)

    But,

    3 = 3 (so you can use three lines here as it is exactly the same thing)

    That's as simple as i can put it :)
